In-form RCB eye fifth win against slumping LSG

In-form RCB eye fifth win against slumping LSG

Lucknow, May 8 (UNI) High-flying Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), buoyed by a four-match winning streak and Virat Kohli’s red-hot form, will look to tighten their grip on an IPL 2025 playoff berth. They take on a struggling Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) side battling a three-match losing slump, in the 59th league encounter at Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium here on Friday.

RCB have been in imperious touch with the bat, led by Kohli's sublime consistency — the former India skipper has notched up four consecutive fifties. With strong support from the likes of Jacob Bethell, Tim David, and the explosive Romario Shepherd, the visitors boast a deep and dangerous batting lineup.

RCB currently hold a slight edge in win probability, according to projections, and will be eyeing their fifth straight victory to surge ahead in the points table. A win on Friday could potentially take them to the top of the standings, further boosting their playoff aspirations.

In contrast, LSG's campaign has lost steam in recent weeks. After a promising mid-season surge, the hosts have slumped to three consecutive defeats. Their bowling attack has failed to contain opposition batsmen, conceding over 200 runs in successive matches, while their star-studded batting order has lacked consistency.

Rishabh Pant, leading the side, has struggled to make an impact with the bat, and the likes of Nicholas Pooran, David Miller, and Ayush Badoni have failed to convert starts into match-winning contributions.

On the bowling front, Avesh Khan and Mayank Yadav have been expensive, while Digvesh Singh Rathi has lacked penetration despite picking up occasional wickets.

RCB's bowling unit, meanwhile, appears more balanced. Lungi Ngidi, who replaced Josh Hazlewood, impressed with a three-wicket haul in his last outing. Veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and spinner Krunal Pandya provide control and wicket-taking options in the middle overs.

The pitch here has offered a balanced contest between bat and ball, with an average first innings score of 175 this season. Teams bowling first have had greater success, winning four of the five matches played at the venue.

Weather is expected to be hot and partly cloudy, with no threat of rain. Toss is likely to play a crucial role, with the chasing side enjoying a statistical advantage.

Despite LSG having won two of the last three head-to-head encounters, RCB’s current form and momentum place them as clear favourites heading into this must-win fixture for both teams.
