Farmer shot at by Kuki militant in Manipur, woman dies in crossfire

Imphal, June 19 (UNI) A 60-year-old farmer was critically injured after a suspected Kuki militant allegedly fired at him at Phubala in Bishnupur district on Thursday.
In a follow-up operation, an encounter ensued between combined force and suspected Kuki militants, in which a woman died in cross firing.
The farmer who was injured in the firing by Kuki militant, was identified as Ningthoujam Biren, and is undergoing treatment at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.
Some other farmers who were in the area said they were working in the area when they heard several gunshots. They protested the repeated attacks by Kuki militants on farmers, the recent one being attack on farmers at Leitanpokpi, Imphal East by Kuki youths.
The protesters said large number of central forces are stationed near areas where the Kuki militants were firing.
The farmers said they need to work now as it is the peak season or they will not have adequate rice for the next year. To protest the attack, they blocked roads.
Leader of RPI (Athawale), Mahesh Thounaojam, expressed his concern saying that attacks on farmers are increasing in Manipur.
MLA Thongam Shanti said even after imposition of President’s Rule, there is no positive development on the ground.
Meanwhile, the people of the area have resolved to start a stir if the Governor, Chief Secretary and Security Adviser don’t visit the site and ensure safety of farmers and villagers.
A combined team of police and security personnel, meanwhile, has launched an operation to nab the Kuki militants and an encounter ensued in Churachandpur district.
A woman was hit in the encounter, and she has succumbed to the injuries.
Police said security forces have launched a search operation in and around Langchingmanbi, Heichanglok, and the western areas of Phubala village.
During the course of the operation, security forces came under fire from unknown armed miscreants and the forces retaliated accordingly. During the crossfire, one woman from Langchingmanbi village was found dead with a bullet injury.
Local police have attended to the incident and the deceased is being transported to district hospital,
Churachandpur for necessary legal formalities.
Cases have been registered in connection with the incidents, and investigation is underway, police said.
Combined security forces are continuing search operations to nab the culprits. Every effort is being made to bring those responsible to justice at the earliest.
Additionally, security arrangements related to farming activities in the area will be reviewed. Adequate security shall be provided to ensure the safety of farmers in the fields and prevent recurrence of such incident, police added.
