Meghalaya CM vows justice on Indore’s tourist, NDRF, SDRF continue search & rescue ops

Shillong, June 5 (UNI) The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local villagers continue searching for Sonam Raghuvanshi, wife of murdered Madhya Pradesh tourist Raja Raghuvanshi, even as Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma says perpetrators would be booked and punished.
“The government will leave no stone unturned in uncovering what exactly happened to the couple. Those responsible for the murder will be brought to book and punished,” Sangma said.
“We are working overtime to get to the fact of what exactly happened. Nothing is clear about the sequence of events as of now,” the Chief Minister said, even as he promised the family members that they will get to the depths of the facts.
Terming the incident as “unfortunate”, the Chief Minister said, “This is something we have seen before in Meghalaya. We all know that Meghalaya has always been a tourist-friendly area, and their safety has been ensured.”
On the Raghuvanshi family's demand for a CBI probe, Sangma said that it is too early to comment on it.
“It is too early to comment on what has happened, as there are too many links, and it is also too early to say how to move forward. But whatever has to be done will be done to see that the people who did this are brought to book,” the Chief Minister stated.
Meanwhile, the NDRF and SDRF continued their search and rescue operations in the gorge below the Weisawdong falls parking lot at Riat Arliang, where the decomposed body of Raja was found on Monday.
“Our boys rappelled down over 450 feet down the gorge. We have thoroughly searched 800 square metres of the area, but we didn’t find anything nor any foul ordour,” NDRF Team Commander Lal Ringson told UNI.
He said the search has been called off due to poor visibility and would resume the search on Friday.
The newlyweds were on a honeymoon to Sohra, the wettest place on earth and had checked in at Shipara Homestay at Nongriat village- home to the famed living double decker root bridge on May 22. The next morning, they checked out of their homestay and disappeared.
The missing of couple came to light when a two-wheeler, which they had hired, was found abandoned on May 24 at Sohrarim village between Shillong and Sohra road.
After eight days of gruelling search, police found the decomposed body of Raja in a deep gorge below the Weisawdong falls parking lot at Riat Arliang. They have also seized a “murder weapon” from the spot, which they believe has been used in the murder of Raja.
Meghalaya police are awaiting the post mortem report after the decomposed body of Raja.
Meghalaya police have filed a murder case in this regard and a Special Investigation Team headed by Superintendent of Police (Shillong City) Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor has been constituted for further probe into the death.
