Mizoram: Police disable tyres of 60 Myanmar refugee-owned bikes in crackdown on illegal vehicles

Aizawl, Apr 20 (UNI) In a bid to check the use of unregistered foreign vehicles, police in Mizoram’s Lunglei district have dismounted the front tyres of 60 Chinese-made motorcycles used by refugees from Myanmar, who have taken shelter in various relief camps in the state’s southern region.
The operation, carried out over two days beginning Friday, targeted Kenbo125 motorcycles — a popular Chinese model commonly smuggled across the border. The crackdown was conducted within Lunglei town and surrounding villages, district superintendent of police Jerome Lalmuankima said.
here on Sunday.
“These vehicles were brought into India illegally. As per the law, foreign-made vehicles are not allowed to operate on Indian roads without proper registration. Our aim is to stop the movement of such vehicles,” the SP said.
Police officials said the action is also intended to prevent the possible use of unregistered two-wheelers in smuggling activities, including trafficking of narcotics from Myanmar, a known transit hub for illicit drugs in the region.
Though no criminal charges have been filed, the owners' identities and the locations of the camps they reside in have been recorded. Authorities stated that the dismounted tyres will be returned to the owners should they decide to return to Myanmar.
Lunglei, once directly bordering Myanmar, now lies adjacent to Hnahthial district after administrative reorganisation. However, it remains a key area for monitoring refugee movement and related border concerns.
Earlier this week, Transport department officials also seized six foreign-made motorcycles at Sihhmui near Aizawl, including four Kenbo125s, one Super Wave 135, and one Dayang, all Chinese brands.
Officials said these vehicles had been illegally brought in from across the border and cannot be registered under Indian law without Customs clearance and adherence to standard operating procedures issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
Driving unregistered foreign-made vehicles is prohibited under Section 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and violators risk seizure and penalties, authorities added.
Since the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, over 35,000 refugees have entered Mizoram, with many settling in camps along the state’s southern districts.
