Honeymoon murder case: Court remands Sonam, Raj to 2 days police custody, others to judicial custody

Shillong, June 19 (UNI) A lower court here in Meghalaya on Thursday remanded Sonam Raghuvanshi and Raj Singh Kushwaha, the prime accused in Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, to two additional days of police custody.
The three other co-accused -- Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi -- in the murder case have been sent to 14 days judicial custody.
"Sonam Raghuvanshi and Raj Kushwaha were remanded to two days of police custody and the other three accused to 14 days judicial custody," prosecution counsel Tushar Chanda told reporters.
All the five accused were first taken to the Shillong Civil hospital for medical check-up and then produced before the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, East Khasi Hills district, Don Kitbor Koshy Mihsil.
Investigators in the murder case said that there are several loose ends that need to be tightened because both Sonam and Raj have been giving contradictory statements in connection with the murder.
“These two days will be used for analysis, after which we still have four days in hand if we need to request further police custody,” Vivek Syiem, the district police chief of East Khasi Hills, said.
Syiem further said that police will take custody of the other three conspirators - Vishal, Akash and Anand - as and when the Special Investigation Team (SIT) returns with new evidence in the murder case.
The SIT of Meghalaya Police, which is currently in Indore has interrogated Govind Raghuvanshi, brother of Sonam, and the police has also located the driver who transported Sonam, the police official said.
Syiem said that the SIT is still searching for Sonam’s second mobile phone, believed to be with her personal belongings, including jewellery, which were initially locked inside a location in Indore.
“However, it appears those items were removed by someone before the police arrived. The SIT is trying to trace them,” he said.
