MoRTH floats tender for much awaited Jorhat Majuli bridge

Guwahati, May 22 (UNI) The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways floated the tender for the much-awaited Jorhat-Majuli Bridge over the Brahmaputra in Assam on Thursday.
Disclosing this on his X handle, State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked Union Minister for Road Transport Nitin Gadkari.
"Great news for Assam. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has today floated the tender for the much-awaited Jorhat–Majuli Bridge—a 6.81 km, 2-lane bridge with an estimated cost of Rs. 600.51 crore.
My heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Union Minister @nitin_gadkari Ji for making this effort into a reality," Sarma wrote on his X handle.
The 6.81 km long two-lane bridge will be built at an estimated cost of Rs.600.51 crore.
Sarma has all along been persuading the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to expedite the tender process for the project.
The Jorhat Majuli bridge has been a long standing demand of the people of Majuli. The construction of the bridge started in 2021. However, the construction came to a halt in 2024 after original contractor UP State Bridge Corporation Ltd. abandoned the project and finally withdrew from the project after spending Rs. 192.50 crore.
The proposed bridge would become the lifeline for the people of Majuli Island, now a district, as it remains cut off from the mainland Assam for most of the year due to floods. UNI AS SSP
