BJD demands justice for Koraput rape victim

BJD demands justice for Koraput rape victim

Bhubaneswar, May 6 (UNI)The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has demanded strict, appropriate, and exemplary punishment for those responsible for the rape of an 8-year-old girl at the Guneiguda ST & SC Girls’ Hostel in Lamtaput Block, Koraput District, Odisha.

In a strongly worded statement, the BJD expressed deep concern, noting that despite having a Chief Minister from the tribal community, incidents of rape and atrocities against tribal girls continue unabated.

A high-level BJD delegation visited the Regional Office of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes in Nayapalli and submitted a formal appeal demanding justice for the minor victim of the brutal incident.

The delegation alleged that such incidents are frequently reported in the media, yet the state government has failed to take any meaningful punitive or corrective action.

"Instead of ensuring justice, there appears to be an effort to shield the perpetrators," BJD leaders said, strongly condemning the BJP-led state government in Odisha for its apathetic, weak, and irresponsible approach to issues impacting the tribal community.

Following extensive media coverage of the incident, a BJD representative team visited the crime site on May 3.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the team met the victim and her family, expressed heartfelt condolences, and assured them of the party’s commitment to securing swift and effective justice.

The BJD delegation reiterated its demand for exemplary punishment for the perpetrators. The party also called for strict action against the Headmistress for gross negligence and urged the SC & ST Development Department to issue strong directives to ensure accountability and prevent similar lapses in the future.
