Nepal minister expresses concern over death of girl student at KIIT

Bhubaneswar, May 2 (UNI) Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Arzu Rana Deuba expressed deep concern over the death of a Nepali girl student who was found dead in her hostel at KIIT University on Thursday night.

Taking to her X handle, Deuba wrote, “The death of a Nepali girl student has deeply saddened us.”

She said diplomatic steps have been initiated to ensure a proper investigation into the incident and that discussions were ongoing with both the Indian and Odisha governments.

The deceased, Prisha Shah, a first-year B.Tech Computer Science student from Nepal, was found dead in her hostel room on Thursday night.

She lived in the same hostel where another Nepali student, Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech Computer Science student, died by suicide on February 16 last.

Police Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh stated that Shah, who was alone in her hostel room, did not respond during a routine attendance check conducted by the university authorities.

Upon further inspection, she was found hanging in her room.

A forensic team has examined the room, and no suicide note was recovered. The student's laptop and mobile phone have been seized for investigation.

The police commissioner added that an unnatural death case has been registered, and no formal complaint has been received so far.

Meanwhile, the body of the student was sent to AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Thursday night. The autopsy is scheduled for Friday, following the arrival of her parents, who were informed by KIIT University officials.

The Commissioner said strict action will be taken if anyone is found responsible for the incident.

The Odisha government has extended its support to the family of the deceased and conveyed its condolences, according to an official statement.
