Kolkata, Apr 16 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday launched a scathing attack against the Central government urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "rein in" his Home Minister, Amit Shah, for allegedly "using" central agencies to enable infiltrators from Bangladesh to create unrest in the state.
“I would request the Prime Minister to keep a check on Amit Shah. He is harming the country most to serve his political interests. Why is he (Amit Shah) in such a hurry? He will never become the Prime Minister, and what will he do once Modi-ji leaves?
"The PM must see how his Home Minister is misusing central agencies. PM Modi-ji must control him,” Banerjee said at a meeting with the Muslim clerics at Netaji Indoor Stadium here.
Mamata’s allegation comes in the wake of ongoing claims over the past few days by several Trinamool Congress leaders, accusing the BSF of "aiding" the entry of Bangladeshis into the state to stir unrest under the pretext of protest.
The Bengal Chief Minister's criticism comes in the wake of widespread violence that broke out during protests against the new law on Friday. The unrest saw several vehicles, including police vans, set on fire, stones hurled at security personnel, and road blockades across the districts of Malda, Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly.
In Murshidabad, the violence claimed three lives and left several others injured, prompting the Calcutta High Court to order the deployment of central forces.
“There were people wearing BSF dress and chappals who incited the violence. I have information that children were given Rs 5000 to Rs 6000 for pelting stones. We are investigating it and no one will be spared,” Mamata said.
“That man (Amit Shah) is responsible for the planning. I didn't want to take the name but I am helpless. Modi ji should have allowed all agencies to function under his control and he is misusing it. Modi ji should stop him,” she added.
The Chief Minister referred to a tweet quoting the Union Home Ministry that said that Bangladesh is involved in this riot. “To engage in riots by using certain agencies that facilitate movement of people from there ... If that is the case (allowing people from Bangladesh), the Central government is responsible since BSF guards the borders, not us. State government doesn’t have the responsibility to guard the borders,” Banerjee said.
Mamata also alleged that the BSF was involved in the firing incident that resulted in the death of a civilian. The victim, reportedly injured during police firing in Suti, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a state-run hospital on Saturday.
“I have received information that the BSF was involved in the firing. I will instruct the Chief Secretary to submit a report on the incident, and appropriate action will be taken,” she stated.

When asked about it, the leader of the opposition, Suvendu Adhikari said, “This is a fabricated and malafide statement by the Chief Minister of West Bengal. If BSF would not have been deployed, the situation would have worsened. They have brought back people to their houses. They have done a commendable job.”
