Meghalaya filmmaker Kurbah wins big at Moscow International Film Festival

Shillong, Apr 25 (UNI) Two-time National Film Award (India) winner and self-taught filmmaker, Pradip Kurbah from Meghalaya, won two major honours at the Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF) 2025 for his Khasi film ‘Ha Lyngkha Bneng.’

Kurbah’s film ‘Ha Lyngkha Bneng’, or ‘The Elysian Field’ in English, tells the story of a secluded village in Meghalaya gradually being deserted due to urban migration. It explores themes of loneliness, resilience, and the strength of human connections through the lens of friendship and survival.
Filmed over two years in and around Sohra, Meghalaya, Ha Lyngkha Bneng captures the region’s landscapes and cultural richness.
The journey of Ha LyngkhaBneng began in 2020 when it was selected for both the Asian Project Market in Busan, South Korea, and the Co-Production Market at Film Bazaar, organized by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) of India.
““I’m overwhelmed, humbled, and filled with gratitude. ‘Ha Lyngkha Bneng’ has just won Best Film and Best Director… To say this is a dream come true would still fall short of what I feel right now,” Kurbah wrote on his social media post.
“This is for Meghalaya—for its people, its stories, and its spirit. Your support of local cinema is what inspires us to dream, to take risks, and to keep telling stories that matter. This award is yours too,” the self-taught filmmaker further wrote.
Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF) is one of the oldest world film forums (the second after the Venice Film Festival). The Moscow International Film Festival has been leading its history since 1935.
The 47th MIFF was held to promote cultural exchange and mutual understanding between nations and to develop further cooperation among filmmakers of the world.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma congratulated Kurbah on his truly well-deserved international recognition.
“This remarkable honor is not only a celebration of his immense talent, but also a proud moment for our culture and heritage. Through his storytelling, he has brought the richness of our roots to the global stage, reminding the world of the beauty and depth that our state carries,” Sangma wrote on X formerly known as Twitter.
“Pradip’s work inspires, uplifts, and paves the way for many more stories yet to be told. His success is a reflection of what is possible when passion meets purpose. We are beyond proud and absolutely thrilled to witness his journey and the continued impact of his art,” the Chief Minister said.
