Punk rock icon Billy Idol nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

London/Los Angeles, Apr 9 (UNI) Billy Idol, best known as the singer for the highly influential British punk rock band Generation X, has earned a nomination for the 2025 induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The nomination is one of the first major developments for him this year, after the ‘Dancing By Myself’ singer released ‘Still Dancing’ - the first single for his upcoming 2025 album ‘Dream Into It’- which is also his first album in over 11 years.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about both his nomination, as well as the possibility of the new album being accepted into the rock museum, he said “Well that would be fantastic".
Speaking on a Zoom call from his LA home, the British singer was, however, quick to point out that many punk legends and progenitors of the genre had not even been nominated in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
“New York Dolls aren’t in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and they’re a seminal band. The MC5 only got in last year. I can understand why this is my first time,” he said.
Idol has appeared at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony twice before. In 2020, he participated virtually, speaking in a video about the influence of inductees, the glam rock icons Marc Bolan and T. Rex. In 2024, he took the stage as part of an all-star tribute band honouring heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne’s induction into the Hall.
While some artists — such as Chic, The Smiths and Jane’s Addiction — have been nominated multiple times without being inducted, Idol could get in on his first try. He’s a strong candidate if the fan vote is any indication, sitting in third place this week behind Phish and Bad Company according to the Hall’s leaderboard.
“I’m excited about it,” Idol said, talking about this year’s upcoming Rock Hall ceremony. “I really enjoyed Ozzy’s solo induction. That was a lot of fun. Apart from seeing people I already know like Roger Daltrey and Sammy Hagar, I met people like Dua Lipa. It was a great night.
“It got me thinking about the people who started rock ‘n’ roll: Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis.”
“Being in something with those guys, I couldn’t have imagined that when we started out a million years ago in punk rock, especially since that was such a push against the establishment,” he added.
Regarded as the ‘rebel’ star of rock’n roll, a punk icon, and a complete anti-establishment figure in the 70’s and 80’s, Idol gained a lot of infamy for his drug addiction and alcoholism, something which he has referenced in his new album.
“Punk rock was all about trying to write your own songs and be your own boss,” said the ‘Rebel Yells’ singer. “We broke through at a time when a lot of other punk rock people didn’t go mainstream — or couldn’t I suppose. Calling myself Billy Idol was more ‘80s than punk rock. I enjoyed all the success, but at the same time I wanted to keep a credibility factor.”
In his solo career, while remaining predominantly in the punk rock and pop-punk scene, Idol has experimented with several genres including new wave, hard rock, electronic, techno, jazz, and glam rock.
The 69-year-old British singer is one of MTV’s first stars, currently having over 1.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify and has sold over 40 million albums worldwide. His albums ‘Billy Idol’ and ‘Rebel Yells’ have been respectively certified as gold and double platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America).
