Timothee Chalamet to be honoured at Italy’s prestigious David di Donatello Awards

Los Angeles, May 2 (UNI) ‘Dune’ star Timothee Chalamet is set to receive the David for Cinematic Excellence honorary award at this year’s David di Donatello film awards in Italy, on May 7.
The 70th David di Donatello Awards will be hosted by veteran Italian actress Elena Sofia Ricci and English singer Mika.
Reflecting on the honour, Piera Detassis, President and Artistic Director of the Academy of Italian Cinema, praised Timothée Chalamet as “one of the most unpredictable and talented protagonists of international cinema today.”
She added that Chalamet stands out for his ability to embody the complexity of an auteur actor while also shaping trends and styles as a cultural icon, Deadline reported.
“The Academy is delighted to award him the David for Cinematic Excellence, which is meant to be an acknowledgement of the great actor of quality and innovative films, and, at the same time, of the global protagonist,” Detassis added.
“It is important for us to remember how his worldwide recognition came about thanks to a wonderful Italian film, ‘Call Me by Your Name’, directed by one of our most internationally acclaimed directors, Luca Guadagnino. Essential and absolutely contemporary crossroads of cultures and visions, a match that David di Donatello is delighted to celebrate.”
The David di Donatello Awards, established in 1955 and often referred to as the Italian Oscars, are Italy's most prestigious film honours. They recognise excellence in Italian and international cinema, encompassing categories such as Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress.
The David Speciale, much like France’s Cesar Awards, Britain’s BAFTA’s, is a special award presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the film industry.
Chalamet's recognition underscores his growing influence in international cinema and stands as testimony to his acting prowess.
The ‘Wonka’ star closed 2024 with a bang, with both his films ‘Dune 2’ and ‘The Complete Unknown’ receiving a massive acclaim by audiences and critics alike. In addition, both films saw Chalamet’s performance being lauded, with the latter even earning him an Oscar nomination. The 29-year-old is set to open 2025 with his upcoming film ‘Marty Supreme’.
