Jake Holmes sues Led Zeppelin again for copyright infringement over ‘Dazed and Confused’

London/Los Angeles, May 6 (UNI) American folk rock singer Jake Holmes has once again sued Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page for taking songwriting credit for his 1967 track ‘Dazed and Confused’, which has often been incorrectly attributed to the band.
Holmes named the Sony Pictures film studio as one of several co-defendants, after noticing that the track was miscredited in the ‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’ documentary.
The complaint was filed in the California federal court and alleges copyright infringement and breach of contract. Holmes claims that two early live recordings of the song were included in the movie without permission or payment, according to Loudwire.
The lawsuit read that Page and his co-defendants "wilfully infringed the Holmes composition by falsely claiming that the Holmes composition is the Page composition, by purporting to license use in the film of the Holmes composition as if it was the Page composition, and by collecting license fees for use of the Holmes composition in the film."
Holmes' complaint further alleges that Jimmy Page has released multiple live recordings of ‘Dazed and Confused’ without providing proper credit or compensation.
These include performances featured on ‘Yardbirds '68, Live at the BBC Revisited’, and ‘The Yardbirds: The Ultimate Live at the BBC’, among others. Holmes is seeking damages of at least $150,000 for each instance of copyright infringement.
The song, which was released on the band’s debut album is noted for being one of the English rock legends’ most iconic songs, which they have frequently performed on-stage.
However, it was also among their most controversial releases, as Led Zeppelin was noted to have plagiarised the song from the 85-year-old, without giving him credit.
First released in 1967 by Holmes, the track was later covered by English psychedelic rock group, The Yardbirds, before it was further reworked by Led Zeppelin for their debut album in 1969.
The song was made significantly heavier, with an entirely different arrangement, a far more blues-oriented sound, as well as several lyrical changes. However, the song retained some key elements of Holmes' original version, including the title, core melody, descending bassline, and some lyrical themes.
Jake Holmes did not file any case against Led Zeppelin for several years before finally suing the group in 2010 for copyright infringement. The track was officially credited to Holmes, with Led Zeppelin’s version attributed as ‘Jimmy Page being inspired from Jake Holmes.’
Led Zeppelin, despite their status as one of the all-time greatest rock bands ever, has been accused of plagiarism in their early career too.
This includes some of the band’s most iconic tracks such as ‘Whole Lotta Love’, ‘Lemon Song’, ‘Stairway to Heaven’, ‘Since I’ve Been Loving You’, ‘Black Mountain Side’, and ‘Babe I’m Gonna Leave You’.
As such, there have been many lawsuits filed against the band for either stealing content, or not giving recognition and due royalties. This has often resulted in Led Zeppelin being publicly criticised by several musicians, who have bashed them for picking their obscure tracks from the ‘50s, ‘60s, reworking them, and passing them off as their own work.
