New Delhi, Mar 12 (UNI) Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita paid an official visit to Uruguay, Bahamas, Barbados and Nicaragua from February 28-March 8, that helped reinforce India’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties and further advancing its engagement with the Latin American and Caribbean region.
During his visit to Montevideo, Uruguay, from February 28-March 2, MoS Margherita represented India at the swearing-in ceremony of the new President Yamandú Orsi on March 1. On the sidelines, he met with the incoming Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining, a statement said.
His visit to The Bahamas, from March 2-4, was the first standalone bilateral Ministerial level visit from India. During the visit, MoS Margherita called on Prime Minister Philip Davis, Foreign Minister Frederick Mitchell, Minister of Economic Affairs and Minister of Education.
In Barbados, from March 4-6, MoS received the 'Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados' award, bestowed upon PM Narendra Modi for his strategic leadership and COVID-19 assistance. During the visit, he called on PM Mia Amor Mottley, Foreign Minister Kerrie Symmonds and engaged with the Minister of Health and Minister of Culture.
In Nicaragua, from March 6-8, MoS Margherita held meetings with Foreign Minister Valdrack Jaentschke, Minister Advisor to the President for Policies and International Relations Orlando Tardencilla, Minister of Finance, Minister of Development Industry & Commerce, Minister of Health, Minister of Energy and the President of the Central Bank.
The visit to four countries reinforced India’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties and further advancing India's engagement with LAC region. During the visit, MoS (PM) engaged with Indian Diaspora and appreciated their contribution in strengthening the bilateral relations with these countries.
It also provided an opportunity to follow up on the roadmap outlined for our engagements with LAC region by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Second India-CARICOM Summit, the statement added.
