“PM @narendramodi arrives in Accra, Ghana. PM was accorded a ceremonial and colourful welcome. In a special gesture, PM was received by President of Ghana @JDMahama at the airport.
“This is the first visit by any Indian PM in last 30 years to Ghana.”
PM Modi was presented with a Guard of Honour, along with a 21-gun salute on his arrival at the airport
This gesture is reflective of the strong and historic bonds of friendship between the two nations, a statement said. The Indian diaspora lined the roads from the airport, waving the Indian tricolour and shouting “Modi, Modi” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” as his convoy passed towards the hotel.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Ghana is the first such visit in the last three decades. This historic visit would further deepen the partnership between India and Ghana, and underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its engagement with Africa and Global South Partners.
In his departure statement, PM Modi had said he is visiting Accra at the invitation of President John Dramani Mahama, on July 2-3.
“Ghana is a valued partner in the Global South and plays an important role in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States. I look forward to my exchanges aimed at further deepening our historical ties and opening up new windows of cooperation, including in the areas of investment, energy, health, security, capacity building and development partnership. As fellow democracies, it will be an honour to speak at the Parliament of Ghana.”
The Indian community in Ghana numbers over 15,000. Some of them have been in Ghana for over 70 years. Some families are now the fourth generation in Ghana and most have acquired Ghanaian citizenship. Several expatriates are also working for MNCs and prominent local Ghanaian businesses as skilled workers. The Indian community is served by a Hindu Temple, a Gurudwara, and a Hindu Monastery, (the latter founded by a Ghanaian convert to Hinduism). ISKCON Temple (mostly run by Ghanaians) and Art of Living Centre are also active.
India is among the top trading partners of Ghana and is the largest destination for Ghanaian exports, driven largely by India’s import of gold, which accounts for over 70% of total imports from Ghana.
Ghana’s main exports to India include gold, cocoa, cashew nuts, and timber products, whereas India exports to Ghana a broad range of goods such as pharmaceuticals, agricultural machinery, transport vehicles, electrical equipment, plastics, iron and steel, ethyl alcohol beverages and spirits, cereals, and made-up textiles. In FY 2024-25, bilateral trade between the two countries reached US$ 3,137.29 million, with India’s exports amounting to US$ 1,346.75 million and imports from Ghana at US$ 1,790.54 million. Indian companies have made significant investments in Ghana across a wide range of sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, construction, education, pharmaceuticals, ICT, automotive, and FMCG. Major Indian companies operating in Ghana include Tata, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra, Escorts, L&T, NIIT, Shapoorji Pallonji, and several leading Indian pharmaceutical firms.
For India, the visit is significant as President John Dramani Mahama assumed office in January this year after a landslide victory. The visit will help in the continuity as well as deepening the relationship and to discuss various ways to further strengthen the relationship, said Dammu Ravi, Secretary ER in a briefing earlier this week.President Mahama has been to India in the past, particularly for the India-Africa Forum Summit in 2015. The two leaders have met in the past.
There will be a few focus items during the talks, including agriculture, where the President is keen to engage with India. He is also keen on the vaccine development, creating a vaccine hub in Ghana for not just Ghana but also the West Africa context. Defense cooperation is set to become an important item on the agenda and the critical minerals and the digital public infrastructure. A few MOUs are likely to be concluded.
