PM Modi arrives in Accra, welcomed at airport by President Mahama in special gesture

Accra/New Delhi, July 2 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Accra on a two-day state visit to Ghana, and in a special gesture, was received by President John Dramani Mahama at the airport and accorded a ceremonial welcome.
PM Modi is the first Indian PM to visit Ghana after 30 years.He was presented with a Guard of Honour, along with a 21-gun salute at the airport.
The Indian diaspora lined the roads from the airport, waving the Indian tricolour and shouting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” as his convoy passed towards the hotel.
This gesture of the Ghanaian President welcoming PM Modi is reflective of the strong and historic bonds of friendship between the two nations, a statement said.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Ghana is the first such visit in the last three decades. This historic visit would further deepen the partnership between India and Ghana, and underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its engagement with Africa and Global South Partners, it added.
In a departure statement, the PM had said that he will visit Ghana on July 2-3. Ghana is a valued partner in the Global South and plays an important role in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States.
"I look forward to my exchanges aimed at further deepening our historical ties and opening up new windows of cooperation, including in the areas of investment, energy, health, security, capacity building and development partnership. As fellow democracies, it will be an honour to speak at the Parliament of Ghana."
