PM Modi gifts Banarasi saree, makhana, holy water from Maha Kumbh to Mauritius President, wife

Port Louis/New Delhi, Mar 11 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a Banarasi silk saree in a Sadeli box to Mauritius First Lady Vrinda Gokhool, and gifted makhana, a traditional food from Bihar, to Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool, during their meeting in the State House in Port Louis today.
The Banarasi saree, originating from Varanasi, is known for its fine silk and zari work, while the Sadeli box from Gujarat features intricate inlay craftsmanship.
PM Modi also gifted holy water from the Sangam from the Maha Kumbh in a Brass and Copper Pot to Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool, as well as a Ganesha statue.
According to a statement, "The two leaders exchanged views on deepening the special and close bilateral ties between India and Mauritius.
"In this context, they recalled the shared history between the two countries and the existence of strong people-to-people linkages.
"Prime Minister Modi noted that it was an honour for him to attend the National Day celebrations of Mauritius as Chief Guest for the second time. In a special gesture Prime Minister handed over OCI cards to President Gokhool and First Lady Vrinda Gokhool.
"Prime Minister also visited the Ayurveda Garden in the State House, established in collaboration with the Government of India. Prime Minister noted that Mauritius is an important partner for India in advancing the benefits of traditional medicine including Ayurveda.
"After the talks, President Gokhool hosted a State lunch in honour of Prime Minister."
Speaking at the luncheon, PM Modi praised the taste of the “Mauritius thali” cuisine, and said it reflects the composite culture of the Indian Ocean island nation.
He said the thali also reflects the shared history of both nations, and that their bilateral friendship is also reflected in the hospitality of Mauritius.
Thanking President Dharambeer Gokhool and First Lady Vrinda Gokool, the PM reiterated India’s commitment to its friendly ties with Mauritius.
The MEA spokesperson posted on X:
“At the State House, PM @narendramodi was warmly received by President Mr. Dharambeer Gokhool of Mauritius. President also hosted a state lunch in the honour of PM.
“The leaders exchanged views on deepening bilateral ties between India and Mauritius that is anchored in shared history, civilizational linkages & ever growing people to people ties.
“PM also visited the Ayurvedic Garden at the State House, a symbol of India-Mauritius collaboration in traditional medicine.”
