Port Louis/New Delhi, Mar 11 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, paid homage at the Samadhis of Mauritius’ founding father and first prime minister Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Mauritian leader Sir Anerood Jugnauth, who served as both prime minister and President.
PM Modi laid wreaths at the samadhis at the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden. PM Modi along with PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam also planted a bael sapling at the botanical garden.
In a post on X, the PM said:
“Paid homage to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Sir Anerood Jugnauth, two great leaders who have made indelible contributions to Mauritius' progress.”

“Reinforcing joint commitment to a green future, PM & PM @Ramgoolam_Dr
planted a Bael sapling in the garden, contributing to the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative.”
A statement said: “On the occasion, Prime Minister Modi recalled the enduring legacies of the two leaders in the progress of Mauritius and building a robust foundation for India-Mauritius ties.
“Following the wreath laying ceremony, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Mauritius, H.E. Navinchandra Ramgoolam planted a tree under the initiative – "Ek Ped Maa ke Naam” – in the historic garden.”
Prime Minister Modi later called on President Dharambeer Gokhool at the State House.
The two leaders exchanged views on deepening the special and close bilateral ties between India and Mauritius.
In this context, they recalled the shared history between the two countries and the existence of strong people-to-people linkages.
Prime Minister Modi noted that it was an honour for him to attend the National Day celebrations of Mauritius as Chief Guest for the second time. In a special gesture Prime Minister handed over OCI cards to President Gokhool and First Lady Vrinda Gokhool.
Prime Minister also visited the Ayurveda Garden in the State House, established in collaboration with the Government of India. Prime Minister noted that Mauritius is an important partner for India in advancing the benefits of traditional medicine including Ayurveda.
After the talks, President Gokhool hosted a State lunch in honour of Prime Minister.
