New Delhi, Feb 24 (UNI) The Congress on Monday alleged that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was involved in large-scale corruption, including land grabbing, and claimed that nine years of BJP rule had pushed the state's economy into a severe crisis.
Addressing a press conference here, senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, Assam incharge Jitendra Singh, state unit chief Bhupen Kumar Borah, Debabrata Saikia, Rakibul Hussain, Pradyut Bordoloi and Pawan Khera criticised nine years of BJP rule in Assam, calling it corrupt, inefficient, incompetent, rogue, divisive, and hateful. They asserted that the government's failures have pushed the state into a deep crisis.
Labelling Himanta Biswa Sarma as the "most corrupt Chief Minister in the country," Gaurav Gogoi accused the BJP-led government of failing on multiple fronts. He claimed that unemployment has reached an all-time high, Assam’s economy is in crisis, and law and order have collapsed.
The Senior Congress leader further alleged that the law is being misused to target political opponents selectively and that the BJP’s hypocrisy on illegal immigration has been fully exposed.
He also accused the CM of practicing the worst kind of divisive politics by destroying Assam’s culture, exploiting the natural resources, no development and investment is only on paper.
Gogoi also criticized the CM’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma accusing her of becoming a “business tycoon in eastern India in just four years”.
He alleged that she had “acquired multiple tea gardens, including Kanchanjuri Tea Estate and Radha Krishna Tea Estate, along with several others under the names of close associates”.
The Senior Congress leader further alleged that the CM’s wife had “expanded her business empire by acquiring a news portal, opening a McDonald’s outlet, and establishing an international school”.
He also claimed that her company, “Pride East Entertainments Private Limited, reportedly received a central subsidy of Rs 10 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana”.
Gogoi also accused the BJP of intimidating many of its leaders but warned that they won’t get scared.
“We will not let the BJP sit in peace until the elections are over. They will be able to sit in peace after the elections because then they will be in the Opposition,” he said.
