Shimla, Mar 14 (UNI) Former Congress MLA from Bilaspur Bambar Thakur was shot by unidentified assailants from a close range near his residence here on Friday afternoon.
According to initial reports, unidentified assailants fired nearly 12 rounds, injuring Thakur and his personal security officer (PSO), Sanjeev Kumar.
The former MLA and his PSO sustained gunshot wounds in the back and abdomen.
Thakur was initially treated in Bilaspur and later referred to IGMC Shimla for advanced medical care, while his PSO has been admitted to AIIMS Bilaspur in critical condition.
Bilaspur Sadar SHO has deployed a team to trace and arrest the assailants. Reports suggest that a few other people were also injured in the firing and are receiving treatment.
Thakur’s son, Ishan Singh, confirmed the firing through a Facebook post, stating that his father was shot and is undergoing treatment.
Talking to UNI Local Choki incharge in Bilaspur Rajinder Singh stated that Thakur was rushed to IGMC Shimla and his Personal Security Official Sanjeev Kumar was hospitalised at AIIMS Bilaspur.
Police have launched an investigation and are trying to identify the assailants and the motive behind the firing.
Security has been tightened in the area to prevent any untoward incidents.
