HP: SIT formed to probe Bilaspur shootout, CM meets injured former MLA

Shimla, Mar 15 (UNI) The Himachal Pradesh government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the firing incident on former Congress MLA Bambar Thakur in Bilaspur.
A state government spokesperson confirmed that the SIT will be led by DIG, Central Range, under the supervision of ADG Gyaneshwar Singh. Other members include DIG Somya Sambshivan, Bilaspur SP Sandeep Dhawal, Dy SP Chander Paul, and SHO Sadar Harman Singh.
The decision to form the SIT was taken after Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu visited IGMC Shimla to meet the injured leader. The CM was accompanied by Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania and Industry Minister Harshvardhan Chauhan. Thakur, who suffered a gunshot wound in his upper thigh, remains under medical supervision and is expected to undergo surgery to remove the bullet.
Meanwhile, BJP MLA from Bilaspur Rakesh Jamwal has demanded a high-level probe into the attack, claiming that law and order in the state has collapsed.
Addressing the media in Shimla, he accused the government of negligence, stating that criminals are operating fearlessly, targeting leaders even after they have reported death threats.
Police have already detained one suspect, identified as the person who ferried the attackers to the crime scene.
A manhunt is underway to trace the four assailants, who were caught on CCTV footage opening fire on Thakur before fleeing the scene unharmed.
The attack on Thakur, which took place during Holi celebrations, has sparked political controversy, with both Congress and BJP trading allegations.
Thakur has accused local BJP leaders of shielding the attackers, while BJP leaders claim the incident is proof of the state government’s failure to maintain law and order.
With security heightened in Bilaspur, the SIT is expected to fast-track the investigation, and further arrests are likely in the coming days.
