Hearing in defamation case against Rahul held

Sultanpur (UP), Apr 28 (UNI) The hearing in the defamation case against Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and MP from Rae Bareli Rahul Gandhi was held in a special MP-MLA court of Sultanpur district here in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, court sources said here.
Sources said that the plaintiff's lawyer presented the witness Anil Mishra in the court of Special Judge Shubham Verma, who was cross-examined by Rahul Gandhi's lawyer.
"As the cross-examination process could not be completed, the court of Special Judge has fixed May 17 as the next date of hearing," they said.
Sources said that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijay Mishra, a resident of Hanumanganj, had filed a defamation complaint against Rahul Gandhi in the MP/MLA court in the year 2018.
"He had alleged that Rahul made indecent remarks during the Karnataka elections in 2018 which hurt his sentiments," they said.
Sources said that when the Congress MP did not appear before the court, the then judge issued a warrant and summoned him in December 2023.
"After this Rahul surrendered in the court in February after which the special judge granted him bail on two sureties of Rs 25,000 each. After this, Rahul Gandhi was summoned by the court to record his statement," they said.
Sources said that after several dates, Rahul reached the court on July 26, 2024 and recorded his statement. Claiming himself to be innocent, he said that a political conspiracy is being hatched against him. "After this, the plaintiff was directed to present evidence in the court," they said.
