Punjab: Police arrest three in connection with fake extortion plot

Hoshiarpur, Apr 18 (UNI) Police in Mukerian, Punjab, have arrested three accused in connection with a case involving threats and firing related to a fake extortion plot, allegedly masterminded by a man to secure government gunmen for personal security.
According to a press release issued by the police today, FIR No. 58 was registered on April 8, at the Mukerian police station based on a complaint by Rohit Sharma, of village Pandori, currently residing in Mukerian. The complainant had alleged that he received extortion threats and that unidentified persons fired gunshots outside his house on the night of April 9.
Taking the matter seriously, multiple police teams were formed to investigate the case using scientific and technical methods.
CCTV footage was analysed, and the scooter used in the firing was traced, leading to the arrest of Amardeep Singh alias Shubham of Pandori on April 14.
During preliminary interrogation, Amardeep Singh allegedly revealed that Rohit Sharma, who had earlier been living in Spain and returned to Mukerian about 8–9 months ago, is a self-proclaimed lyricist and writer. He allegedly conspired with his elder brother Vikas Sharma (residing in the USA) to stage the extortion threats. The motive behind the conspiracy was to falsely project a threat perception in order to obtain government-provided gunmen for personal security.
To execute the plan, threatening calls were allegedly made by Gurlal Singh, also residing in the USA, to both Rohit and his brother Vikas. On the night of April 9, accomplices fired outside Rohit’s house to lend credibility to the fake narrative.
Based on these revelations, sections under the Arms Act were added to the FIR.
Police have booked Akash of Bhopur Saida, Vinod Singh of Talwandi Deena Nath, Jobanpreet Singh of Talwandi, Surinder Singh of Avan, mastermind Rohit Sharma, his brother Vikas Sharma, and Gurlal Singh both currently residing in the US.
While Akash and Vinod Singh have been arrested, efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
