Lawyers boycott court proceedings after police jawan assaults advocate in Shimla

Shimla, Apr 21 (UNI) Judicial work at the Himachal Pradesh High Court came to a standstill on Monday as thousands of advocates boycotted court proceedings and staged a protest march in Shimla after a police jawan assaulted an advocate in public view, sparking outrage across the legal community.
The situation eased later in the day after the police jawan was suspended.
The Shimla Bar Association, along with members of the Himachal Pradesh High Court Bar, called off their protest after the errant officer was suspended and senior police officials assured further inquiry.
According to the information from the Bar Association, the conflict began when a police jawan on traffic duty allegedly lost his temper after a young advocate questioned him about a traffic jam. The situation escalated, and the officer reportedly assaulted the advocate in public view.
In protest, thousands of advocates boycotted court proceedings and staged a protest march from the High Court to Chotta Shimla Police Station.
Demonstrators blocked roads, raised slogans, and demanded immediate suspension of the personnel involved, including those from Chotta Shimla Police Station.
The protest brought judicial work at the Himachal Pradesh High Court to a standstill.
The lawyers also insisted on the presence of top police officials on-site. Responding to the growing unrest, Superintendent of Police Shimla and Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) arrived at the protest site and addressed the advocates’ concerns.
After assurances were given and the accused officer was suspended, the protest was peacefully withdrawn.
The Bar Association stated that while they welcomed the prompt action, they would continue to monitor the situation to ensure that the inquiry is conducted fairly and justice is served.
The incident has prompted calls for greater accountability and improved coordination between law enforcement and the legal community to prevent such confrontations in the future.
