Srinagar, Mar 14 (UNI) The Kashmir plains continue to receive widespread intermittent rainfall, while some higher reaches witnessed light snowfall over the past 24 hours.
The Kashmir Valley has been experiencing rainfall for the past five days, and the Meteorological Centre Srinagar on Friday predicted widespread light to moderate rain and snow to continue across Jammu and Kashmir for the next 48 hours.
The weather is likely to remain dry from March 17 to March 24.
Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley were lashed by widespread intermittent rains leading to drop in the temperature and disrupting the normal activities. The precipitation continued at many places across the valley on Friday.
Some higher reaches in Kashmir valley including the ski resort of Gulmarg received light snowfall during the past 24 hours.
Giving parameters of rainfall, the MeT office said that the highest precipitation of 16.4mm of rainfall was recorded at the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Gulmarg also received 6.0 cm of snowfall during the past 24 hours.
The MeT office has also issued an advisory for travellers, tourists and transporters to follow admin/traffic advisory before planning their trip during the period
The farmers have also been advised to suspend farm operations till March 18, besides people living on the higher reaches have been asked to avoid sloppy and avalanche prone areas during the period.
Meanwhile, the night temperature stayed 1 to 3°C above the average at many weather stations of Kashmir while the day temperature recorded on Thursday 2.4°C below normal in most weather stations of the valley.
The maximum temperature recorded in Srinagar on the previous day was 13.1°C and this was 2.0°C below the average of 13.1°C.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar further dropped to 6.0°C recorded during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. This was still 2.3°C above the average for the place during this period of the season.
The minimum temperature at the Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir slipped to a low of -2.8°C and this was still 0.5°C above the average for the place during this period of the season while Pahalgam settled at 2.2°C and Kokernag 4.5°C, the MeT office said.
