Karnataka HC orders body preservation in Hubballi encounter case

Bengaluru, Apr 15 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday intervened in an alleged extra-judicial killing and directed the authorities to preserve the body and forensic evidence of Ritesh Kumar, a migrant labourer from Bihar who was accused of raping and murdering a five-year-old girl in Hubballi.
The Court's interim directions came while hearing a petition filed by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), which sought a CBI investigation into the police encounter that resulted in Kumar’s death.
Appearing for the petitioner, Senior Advocate Aditya Sondhi urged the Court to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court's landmark judgment in PUCL vs State of Maharashtra, which lays down mandatory procedures in cases of encounter killings. He requested that cremation of the body be stayed to enable collection and preservation of key forensic evidence.
