Hyderabad cyber crime police bust major movie piracy racket, arrest youth

Hyderabad, July 3 (UNI) The Cyber Crime Police of Hyderabad have arrested a man for his alleged involvement in a large-scale movie piracy racket that led to the illegal leaking of around 40 Telugu films over the past 18 months.
Acting on a complaint from the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce’s Anti-Video Piracy Cell, police traced the source of a pirated version of the movie #Single, which was circulated online on the day of its release, May 9, 2025. The pirated content was found on platforms such as 1TamilMV, 1TamilBlasters, and 5MoviezRulz, a police statement said on Thursday.
The accused Jana Kiran Kumar (29), an AC technician from Vanasthalipuram, had reportedly contacted piracy handlers via encrypted email and later moved communications to Telegram. He recorded movies using a mobile phone concealed in his shirt pocket during theatrical screenings, and received payments in cryptocurrency (USD 300-400 per film), later converting it to Indian rupees via platforms like ZebPay and CoinDCX.
Films like Pellikani Prasad, Thandel, Rajadhani Files, and others were among the leaked titles. Authorities estimate the Telugu film industry suffered losses worth Rs 3,700 crore in 2024 alone due to piracy.
A case has been registered under multiple sections of the IT Act, Copyright Act, and Cinematograph Act.
Further investigation is underway to identify others involved in the network.
