TN: Police foil bid to smuggle 2,460 kg BIdi leaves to Sri Lanka

Thoothukudi (Tamil Nadu), Mar 17 (UNI) The Q-Branch police on Monday foiled a bid to smuggle 2,460 kg of Beedi leaves to Sri Lanka via sea route at the northern coast of Alanthalai hamlet in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu.
Police said a Q-Branch team, while conducting a special patrol based on specific information, spotted a few unidentified persons attempting to transport some bundles from a cargo van into a mechanized boat.
The smugglers fled the spot by sailing into the sea in the boat, leaving the contraband on the coast when the police approached them.
The police seized 2,460 kg of bIdi leaves packed in 82 bundles, besides the cargo van and two motorcycles used for transporting the bundles to the coastal area.
The seized bidi leave bundles were later handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation.
A probe is underway to ascertain the identity of the smugglers and to arrest them. UNI GSM SSP
