BJP slams Cong govt over illegal immigration data discrepancy

Bengaluru, Mar 12 (UNI) The BJP on Wednesday raised serious concerns in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly over the Congress government’s handling of illegal immigration, questioning the accuracy of official data and calling for stringent action.
BJP MLA Manappa D Vajjal from Lingasugur brought the issue to the forefront, alleging that the state government's figures were grossly underreported.
According to the Congress-led government, Karnataka has only 556 illegal immigrants, but Vajjal claimed that Vijayapura district alone had around 13,000 such individuals. "If one district has 13,000 illegal immigrants, the actual number across the state must be in the lakhs," he argued, highlighting discrepancies in official statistics.
Vajjal further alleged that illegal immigrants had managed to obtain government-issued documents, including ration cards and voter IDs, making it difficult to track them. "These immigrants are involved in drug peddling and narcotics-related activities, misleading local youth," he said, urging the state government to take immediate action.
He called upon Home Minister G Parameshwara to conduct a thorough identification drive across all districts and hold officials accountable for issuing government documents to illegal immigrants. "Bengaluru and Karnataka are globally recognised, and illegal immigrants are harming the state's reputation," he added.
Echoing Vajjal’s concerns, BJP member V Sunil Kumar warned that illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Pakistan posed a serious threat to national security. "This issue needs to be discussed. Rohingyas are settling in places like Kodagu and Bengaluru, and the government should not take this matter lightly," he asserted.
Sunil Kumar pointed out that this influx had been occurring over the past two decades and warned against government inaction.
Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka also raised concerns, particularly about Bengaluru. "People are coming and settling here from Bangladesh. Additionally, individuals from countries like Nigeria are involved in drug peddling, with drugs being supplied from there.
These immigrants are even attacking the police. Bangladeshi immigrants have managed to obtain all the necessary paperwork. We need a detailed discussion on this matter in the House," Ashoka stated.
Responding to the concerns, Speaker UT Khader assured the members that he would consider allowing a comprehensive discussion on the issue and directed Home Minister Parameshwara to provide clarification.
The Congress government had earlier stated that 137 illegal immigrants had been identified in the state, including nationals from Bangladesh and Pakistan, and assured that authorities were closely monitoring their activities.
Of the 137 identified, 25 were Pakistani nationals. Parameshwara reaffirmed that legal action had been initiated against them. UNI BDN SSP
