Hyderabad: Countering fake news is a big challenge: Siasat Urdu daily Editor

Hyderabad, May 6 (UNI): Congress MLC and Editor of the Siasat Urdu Daily Amer Ali Khan on Tuesday said that tackling the menace of fake news had become one of the biggest challenges for the media and government alike.
Speaking at the Hybiz TV Media Awards 2025 at HICC here, Amer Ali Khan delivered a candid and insightful address, reflecting on the transformation of the media landscape and the growing complexities of information dissemination in the digital era.
In his speech while extending his greetings and appreciating the platform for bringing together professionals from diverse fields, he mentioned that his father, veteran journalist Zahed Ali Khan, and senior media figure Ranga Reddy had received the Hybiz awards in earlier editions. "It has become a ritual for me to be here every year. Hybiz and Raj Gopal have been doing a commendable job in recognising excellence across sectors," he said.
Reflecting on his own journey, he remarked that while he continues to be part of the media industry, his current role as a legislator has offered him new insights into how news is created - not just by journalists, but increasingly by political forces.
“It’s difficult now to tell how news is being shaped. Is it created by the media, or is it manufactured within political circles and then turned into buzz?” he observed, adding that the line between reportage and spin was becoming increasingly blurred.
Amer Ali Khan pointed out that despite the high expectations from the present government, there had initially been a communication vacuum in its engagement with the public and media. “The new government struggled to create a buzz, whether in mainstream or social media. But now, we are seeing new initiatives emerging, especially aimed at countering fake news,” he said, referring to the recent flood of misinformation on issues like the incident at the University of Hyderabad (HCU), where fake narratives gained rapid traction.
“Countering fake news has become a big challenge. It’s not just about issuing clarifications anymore - it’s about being ahead of the misinformation,” he said. The ease with which misinformation spreads online, he added, poses a serious threat to credibility and informed discourse.
Highlighting the technological revolution sweeping the media industry, Amer Ali Khan shared a recent conversation with a senior IAS officer in the Telangana Secretariat.
“He told me that prompt engineering, common sense, and a good command of English will drive the new future - in just the next three months,” Amer Ali Khan said.
This statement, he added, reflects the urgency of adapting to new-age technologies like Artificial Intelligence. “AI tools are now doing the work of 50 people, condensed into a single person's task. That’s the level of disruption we’re witnessing,” he noted.
He stressed that the media, especially traditional and vernacular newspapers, must find ways to adapt and survive.
“Earlier, I thought my newspaper, being a vernacular one, had another 10 years to sustain itself comfortably. But COVID-19 and the explosion of social media changed everything. Even regional print publications are now struggling to understand what their readers want,” he added.
