Woman passenger hurt as Middle berth falls in Express train

Chennai, May 12 (UNI) A Woman passenger travelling in an
Express train from Chennai to Palakkad sustained injuries when
the empty middle berth fell on her on Monday.
The incident occurred in Train No. 22651 Dr MGR Chennai Central
-Palakkad Express today in Coach S5, Berth No. 2, Southern Railway
said based on the report from the on-board Railway Staff.
The passenger sustained an injury due to the falling of the middle
berth. At the time of the incident, the middle berth was unoccupied.
The incident occurred after the train had passed Jolarpettai station
Upon receiving information, medical assistance was promptly arranged
by the Commercial and Medical Controls.
However, the passenger refused to disembark from the train at Morappur,
the nearest Railway station from Jolarpettai for medical assistance.
She was subsequently detrained at Salem Railway Station, where emergency
medical assistance was provided at the station.
An ambulance was arranged by the Station Master and she was taken to the
Government Hospital, Salem at 3.05 a.m for further treatment.
It said a joint inspection of Coach S5 (Coach No. SRWWGCN 056303) was
conducted by officials from the Mechanical, RPF, and Traffic departments.
The inspection found that the chain bolt of the berth was in a tightened condition,
and the hook released only when the middle berth was lifted more than 2.5 cm
– which aligns with the standard specifications.
It may be noted that the Coach underwent periodic overhauling on March 16, 2025
and was not due for any maintenance.
Further, before the scheduled departure of the train, primary maintenance involving
thorough scrutiny of coaches was also carried out and fit certificate was issued.
This unfortunate incident appears to have occurred due to improper handling of the
chain link hook by the passenger, which is the designated locking mechanism for
the middle berth.
In a safety appeal, the Railways advised the passengers to ensure that the middle
berth is properly secured using the chain link hook after use.
Improper handling or failure to lock the berth correctly may pose safety risks to fellow
passengers.
"Your cooperation in following these safety practices is essential to ensure a safe and
comfortable journey for all", it said.
