KSCA staff lauded amid RCB stampede tragedy

Bengaluru, June 6 (UNI) A senior Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) member Choodie Shivram on Friday lauded the courageous efforts of the KSCA staff while raising concerns over crowd control and the lack of emergency preparedness in connection with the stampede outside the Chinnaswamy stadium that left 11 dead and 56 injured two days back.
The tragedy occurred ahead of IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) victory celebrations.
Recounting her experience at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Shivram said the initial disturbance seemed minor.
"When I entered the member stand, there was a bit of commotion, typical of match days with people trying to enter without proper passes. But outside, I saw youngsters running wildly, some jumping into Gandhi Park. I thought it was just fan frenzy."
The gravity of the situation dawned on her only moments later.
"I stepped out to make a phone call due to network issues. In the clubhouse lobby, I saw people yelling ‘Jaga madi, jaga madi (make way)’— I assumed a VIP was coming. But then I saw a man being carried in, efforts to revive him failed. Within ten minutes, five more were brought in. One girl was laid down, but she too didn’t survive. The sight of those young bodies being carried in... it was horrifying. It still haunts me."
She criticised the absence of a risk management plan. "Crowds had started building from 1 PM. Why was there no Plan B? No ambulances, no emergency services in key zones, it all looked like an afterthought."
She claimed: "The KSCA staff did not panic. They acted. Some carried victims on their shoulders to safety. One manager was using a stick to prevent youngsters from dangerously jumping over compound walls. These staffers, without any formal disaster training, did what they could with their bare hands. Their response was humane, instinctive, and heroic."
She also claimed there was poor coordination and access routes were obstructed. "Nearly 150 motorcycles were parked along the road between the Police Training Centre and the stadium, blocking movement. On regular match days, there’s always an ambulance in that lane. This time, nothing."
Calling for a thorough review of CCTV footage, she said, "We need to identify who acted responsibly and who didn’t. This tragedy was preventable."
The KSCA and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru have, however, come under the police scanner in the aftermath of the tragedy. UNI BDN SSP
