Praggnanandhaa outplays Abdusattorov in Romania

Bucharest, May 10 (UNI) India's R Praggnanandhaa scored a crucial victory over Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov to move into joint lead at the Grand Chess Tour’s Superbet Chess Classic 2025.
The 19-year-old Grandmaster capitalised on an inaccurate decision by Abdusattorov — a former World Rapid champion — who gave up his dark-square bishop too early. The resulting long-term positional weakness was expertly exploited by Praggnanandhaa, who converted the advantage with clinical precision to register his second win in three rounds.
In other games, teenage Indian prodigy D Gukesh was held to a draw by Romania’s Bogdan-Daniel Deac. Both players missed slim tactical opportunities, settling for a shared point after a tense middlegame.
American No.1 Fabiano Caruana joined Praggnanandhaa in the lead by outplaying France’s Alireza Firouzja. The Frenchman faltered in the endgame, allowing Caruana to pocket the full point and reach 2/3 in the standings.
With three rounds complete, Praggnanandhaa and Caruana top the leaderboard on 2 points each. They are closely followed by a chasing pack of six players on 1.5, including reigning World Champion Ding Liren.
Round 4 of the classical event begins today at 5:30 p.m. IST.
