Dortmund beat Monterrey, set up Real Madrid clash

Atlanta, July 2 (UNI) Borussia Dortmund advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 with a 2-1 win over CF Monterrey at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium today IST.
The German side will now face Real Madrid on July 5 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Serhou Guirassy netted both goals for Dortmund in the first half, finishing two well-crafted moves involving Karim Adeyemi in the 14th and 24th minutes. Dortmund dominated the opening period, combining pace and precision to penetrate Monterrey’s defence.
Monterrey responded after the break, with German Berterame pulling one back in the 48th minute through a well-directed header following a sequence of smart build-up play. Monterrey pushed hard for the equaliser, with Sergio Canales and Berterame coming close. Berterame’s second goal was ruled out for offside in the 65th minute.
Guirassy had two late chances to complete his hat-trick but failed to convert. Monterrey’s Sergio Ramos missed a golden opportunity in stoppage time, sending his header narrowly wide. Dortmund held on to seal their last-eight berth.
Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel played a key role in absorbing Monterrey’s second-half pressure. Head coach Niko Kovac praised his side's composure under pressure and looked ahead to the challenge against Real Madrid.
Monterrey coach Domenec Torrent commended his team’s fighting spirit despite the defeat, noting Dortmund's decisive moments came in just 15 minutes of the first half.
Guirassy was named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match and later reflected on the intensity of the match and the upcoming test against Real Madrid. Ramos, speaking post-match, said the team had nothing to regret, calling it a proud performance despite the result.
The quarterfinal between Dortmund and Real Madrid is set to be one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament, as the German side aims to test itself against the European giants.
