Clashes break out in Nagpur, vehicles set ablaze

Nagpur, Mar 17 (UNI) Police burst tear gas shells after several vehicles were allegedly set ablaze by clashing groups in central Nagpur on Monday night following a dispute, sources said.
The violence broke out in the Mahal area of the Orange city.
Some police officers including Deputy Commissioner of Police Nagpur Archit Chandak sustained injuries as the clashing groups pelted stones.
The sources in the Office of the Director General of Police, Maharashtra, in Mumbai said the situation was now under control.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Nagpur, Archit Chandak said: "This incident occurred due to some miscommunication. Situation is under control right now. Our force here is strong. I appeal to everyone to not step out...or pelt stones.
"Stone pelting has taken place, so we displayed a show of force and also used tear gas."
He also said a few vehicles were set ablaze, which was doused off by calling Fire Brigade.
"A few police personnel were injured, I too sustained a little injury in my leg during stone pelting," said Chandak.
He urged everyone to maintain peace.
"We urge everyone to maintain peace...Do not trust rumours...Do not disturb law and order & support Police. We are taking legal action," the DCP added.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called for peace and urged people not to believe in rumours.
Fadnavis assured that the police are handling the matter and tense the tense situation in the Mahal area.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also made an emotional appeal to the people of Nagpur to maintain harmony.
In a video message, Gadkari who is MP from Nagpur, called for peace and urged people not to believe in rumours amid the ongoing violence in parts of Nagpur. UNI AAA SSP
