Samajwadi Party MLA writes to Dy CM Ajit Pawar to fill vacant posts in Maharashtra Minority Department

Mumbai, May 4 (UNI) Samajwadi Party legislator Rais Shaikh has accused the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra of adopting a "lackadaisical" approach towards minority welfare, and alleged that over 67 percent of posts in the state's Minority Department are lying vacant.
This situation has paralysed the department and severely hampered the effective implementation of various government schemes for minority communities, said MLA Rais Shaikh.
Rais Shaikh has written to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, urging his immediate intervention to fill the vacant posts and ensure proper execution of schemes intended for minority welfare.
According to the data obtained by MLA Shaikh, a total of 609 posts have been approved across the Minority Department, including the Minority Commissionerate, the Minority Training and Research Institute, the Waqf Board, the Punjabi Sahitya Academy, the Waqf Tribunal, the Maulana Azad Board, the Jain Corporation, and various field offices.
However, only 198 posts have been filled so far, leaving 410 posts (67 percent) vacant.
Highlighting the issue, MLA Rais Shaikh said that the Muslim community constitutes 11.54 percent of the state’s population but continues to lag behind in education and employment.
“Schemes from both the Centre and the State must be implemented swiftly to bring this community into the mainstream. Funds must be disbursed without delay. The annual budget allocated to the Minority Department is minimal, and officials are reluctant to join the department. As a result, the department has remained largely non-functional for several years,” he said.
He further pointed out that a Minority Research and Training Institute, modeled on BARTI and SARTHI, was recently established for the development of minorities. “The Minority Commissionerate itself was created on the initiative of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to efficiently implement minority welfare schemes. However, since the required posts in both institutions remain vacant, the community is unable to benefit from these efforts,” he added.
Shaikh emphasised that merely issuing government decisions is not enough.
“Implementation is crucial for effective governance. Despite the approved posts in the Minority Development Department, the government has failed to fill them. The Mahayuti government is deliberately neglecting the Minority Development Department,” said MLA Rais Shaikh.
