Egypt condemns Israel's decision to cut off electricity supplies to Gaza

Egypt condemns Israel's decision to cut off electricity supplies to Gaza

Cairo, Mar 12 (UNI) Egypt on Tuesday condemned Israel's decision to cut electricity supplies to Gaza, denouncing it as "collective punishment" and a violation of international law.

In a statement, Egypt's Foreign Ministry criticised Israel's move as a breach of international humanitarian law and the Fourth Geneva Convention.

The ministry expressed Egypt's complete rejection of policies that collectively punish populations, including the suspension of humanitarian aid, warning that such actions could escalate tensions in Gaza.

Egypt called on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities and take necessary measures to halt these violations.

On Sunday, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen announced an immediate halt to electricity supplies to Gaza, aiming to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages.

According to Israeli figures, 59 hostages remain in Hamas captivity, with around 24 believed to be alive.

Israel has blocked aid shipments, including food, into Gaza since March 2, following the expiration of the initial 42-day phase of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire.
