Iraq, Türkiye discuss ties, energy cooperation

Baghdad, Mar 17 (UNI) Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani met here Monday with visiting Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar to discuss bilateral relations and energy cooperation.
During the meeting, al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraqi government's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Turkish companies across various fields, particularly in the energy sector, as Iraq is working to diversify its energy sources, according to a statement from al-Sudani's media office.
Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of reinforcing cooperation on water management to ensure stable and consistent water flows into Iraq, read the statement.
He also highlighted the government's extensive efforts to resume oil exports from Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, stating that negotiations are currently underway with international oil companies operating in the region to resolve technical issues necessary for restarting exports, read the statement.
For his part, Bayraktar expressed Türkiye's keen interest in further expanding cooperation with Iraq across various fields, including refinery projects and petrochemical industries, the statement said.
He also underscored the importance of exporting Iraqi oil from Basra through Türkiye's Ceyhan Port, and highlighted the promising investment opportunities offered by Iraq's Development Road project, an ongoing infrastructure project aiming to connect Asia with Europe.
Following the meeting, Bayraktar wrote on social media platform X that the two sides discussed ways to deepen energy cooperation, jointly contribute to regional energy security, and increase Türkiye's electricity supplies to Iraq in a short time.
