Mexico City, Apr 16 (UNI) The Criminal Court of Peru said on Tuesday that it had sentenced the country's former president, Ollanta Humala, and his wife, Nadine Heredia, to 15 years of imprisonment over illegal presidential campaign financing.
"The Third National Collegial Criminal Court sentenced Ollanta Humala and Nadine Heredia to 15 years in prison after finding them guilty of money laundering," the court said in a statement.
The former president and his wife also have to pay a fine of $670,000, Peruvian media reported from the courtroom. Heredia's brother was sentenced to 12 years in prison, while four other defendants were handed sentences of five to eight years, according to reports.
Humala, who served as Peruvian president from 2011-2016, was arrested in February 2023 and accused of illegally financing his presidential campaigns in 2006 and 2011. Peruvian prosecutors established that he had received donations from Venezuela and Brazilian construction giants Odebrecht, also known as Novonor, and OAS.
