Trump fires long-time Congress Librarian Carla Hayden sparking widespread criticism from Democrats

Washington, May 9 (UNI) US President Donald Trump has fired the country’s longtime Congress Librarian Carla Hayden, in a move that has sparked widespread criticism and condemnation from Democrats.
The first African-American origin woman to hold the post, Hayden was appointed in 2016 for the position.
The Library of Congress is the national library of the US government and the largest in the world, housing over 170 million books and documents from across the world, including some of the country’s most important papers.
She received a notification in an email late Thursday from the White House's Presidential Personnel Office, according to CBS News.
"On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately," read the email. "Thank you for your service."
The reasons for Hayden’s termination are unknown, but the move was highly criticised by Democrats, with the party’s Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries blasting Trump in a statement, saying that “the unjust decision to fire Dr. Hayden in an email sent by a random political hack is a disgrace and the latest in his ongoing effort to ban books, whitewash American history and turn back the clock."
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement that Hayden’s removal is Trump’s “latest foray in his relentless campaign to dismantle the guardrails of our democracy and punish public servants who don’t bend to his every will.”
Democratic Rep. Joe Morelle of New York, the ranking member on the Committee on House Administration, described the firing as an "ignorant decision" that "will impact America's libraries, our copyrighted economic interests, and service to the American people by threatening support for Congress. His decision is a complete disgrace."
