Turkey to assess risks, coordinate with NATO if decides to send troops to Ukraine – Source

Ankara, Mar 14 (UNI) Ankara will assess the risks if it decides to send its soldiers to Ukraine as peacekeepers and will coordinate its steps with NATO, as it is an indispensable member of the alliance, a diplomatic source in the Turkish capital told Sputnik.
On Thursday, Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that Turkey might send its military to participate in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. However, a Turkish diplomatic source told Sputnik that Ankara had not taken any concrete steps in this direction, adding that the media reports were based on ongoing discussions and not on any official decisions.
"We should not forget that Turkey is an indispensable NATO member. Turkey's military involvement in Ukraine will require diplomatic negotiations. It will be important for Turkey to assess what goals need to be achieved in a peacekeeping mission and what role its troops will play. The Turkish armed forces have experience in peacekeeping operations, but the risks associated with the conflict [in Ukraine] must be considered," the source said.
On January 16, The Telegraph reported, citing sources from the UK government, that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron were secretly discussing jointly sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine after the end of the conflict. Starmer at the time was reportedly not committed to the initiative, while Macron kept pushing for the deployment, which purportedly he had discussed earlier with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier in March that the presence of NATO states' troops on Ukrainian territory under any flag, in any capacity, including as peacekeepers, was a threat to Russia, and Moscow would not accept this under any circumstances.
