Mexico will not pay US 25 pc tariff on cars - Economy Minister

Mexico will not pay US 25 pc tariff on cars - Economy Minister

Mexico City, Mar 28 (UNI) The 25% tariff on the auto sector announced by US President Donald Trump will not apply to cars from Mexico, Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that the United States will be charging a 25% tariff on all cars made outside the country. The tariff will take effect on April 2.
"We export about 3 million cars to the United States, supplying 40% of all auto parts used here in the United States. The 25% tariff does not apply to those vehicles that we export, but instead a discount is provided depending on the composition of their components … The second very important point is auto parts made in Mexico. As of April 2, duties will not be applied. We are at a meeting [in Washington] initiated by the secretary of commerce in order to protect Mexican auto parts," Ebrard said on Wednesday.
He added that during the negotiations, it was also agreed to eliminate multiple taxation for car parts that cross the border several times.
