No newspapers hit stand in Manipur, govt orders probe

Imphal, May 22 (UNI) None of the newspapers published in Manipur produced their Thursday edition due to a protest over halting over a media team going to attend Shirui festival by 4 Mahar Regiment at Imphal East district on May 20 last.
Journalists across the state launched a pen down strike on Wednesday. A general body meeting was held on Wednesday jointly organized by All Manipur Working Journalists' Union and Editor Guild Manipur at Press Club.
A team of journalists discussed the matter with the Governor following which another meeting was conducted at Press Club. The two media bodies announced that all journalists should start working from Thursday however they should not report news related to Manipur State Government, State and Central Forces operating in Manipur until the government submits a report on the incident.
Meanwhile Manipur Chief Secretary issued a statement saying that the Governor of Manipur has constituted an Inquiry Committee to examine the facts and circumstances around the incident involving Security personnel and Manipur State Road Transport bus carrying media personnel to cover the Manipur Shirui Festival, 2025 on 20.05.2025 near Gwalatabi checkpost, Imphal East District. The Inquiry Committee shall consist of N. Ashok Kumar, Commissioner (Home), and Th. Kirankumar Singh, Secretary (IT) . The committee shall look into lapses, if any, and suggest measures to prevent recurrence of such a situation in future. The Enquiry Committee shall submit its report within 15 days. Reacting to the enquiry order the two media bodies said it want to insert a line "The Committee shall also identify the lapses and recommend penalty to those who due to their acts of omissions and commissions had caused the confusion leading to the harassment of journalists leading to their return from Gwaltabi."
Media bodies asked the government to detach the security personnel deployed at Gwaltabi that stopped the bus carrying the journalists elsewhere until the probe was completed.
Meanwhile leaders of women body like Imagi Meira asked how can an official or anyone holding important positions direct the army personnel to black out the word Manipur written on government vehicles.

Bhubaneswar, May 22 (UNI) The Cyber Crime Unit of the Odisha Crime Branch has arrested a man from Howrah for allegedly defrauding a person of Rs 73.62 lakh by threatening him with a so-called "digital arrest."
According to sources at the Odisha Police headquarters on Thursday, mobile phone, SIM card, Aadhaar card, and other incriminating items of the accused, identified as Rohit Kumar Jaiswal, have been seized, and his bank accounts have also been frozen as part of the investigation.
