Tehran, Apr 26 (UNI) The number of people injured by the powerful blast in the port of Bandar Abbas in Iran's south on Saturday has increased to 406, media reports said.
The causes of the blast, which shattered windows in a radius of many miles and was heard on Qeshm Island some 12 miles away, remain unknown and the Iranian Interior Ministry has ordered an investigation, Iranian news agency Fars reported.
The National Iranian Oil Products Refining and Distribution Company said that the explosion had no impact on oil infrastructure, including refineries and pipes, located nearby.
The number of people injured by the blast has increased to 516, the Tasnim news agency reported, citing Iranian medical services.
Following media reports claiming that the blast could have occurred in the terminal for hazardous cargo, a port official made a statement denying this.
"The explosion began in adjacent containers and has no connection to the port’s hazardous materials terminal," cargo terminal chief Pejman Behzadpour was quoted by the Etemad Online news agency as saying.
