NZ PM calls for action against hate on mosque attack anniversary

Wellington, Mar 15 (UNI) Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on Saturday called on New Zealanders to continue confronting the forces that led to the 2019 Christchurch Mosque attacks, stressing that there was no place for Islamophobia in New Zealand.

Speaking at a unity meeting in Christchurch, the largest city in New Zealand's South Island, Luxon reflected on the sixth anniversary of the devastating attack that claimed 51 lives and injured 89 when an Australian white supremacist opened fire at Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Center.

"As we reflect on this day, we must also confront the forces that led to this tragedy," Luxon said.

"Islamophobia -- like all forms of hatred -- has absolutely no place in New Zealand, and it is our duty to challenge it wherever it appears, whether it's in words, policies or in the silence that allows prejudice to fester," he said, adding no one should ever feel unsafe because of their faith, name, or the way they worship.

Luxon also underscored the importance of strengthening social cohesion, highlighting New Zealand's diverse communities as a source of national strength.

He praised the Muslim community's resilience in the aftermath of the attacks, noting its efforts in working with the government, civil society, and other communities to promote inclusivity.
