Odisha constitutes Monitoring Committee for Eco-Sensitive area management

Bhubaneswar, June 4 (UNI) A Monitoring Committee will be constituted to oversee the notification of Environmentally Sensitive Zones as per the approved Zonal Master Plan for the management of Environmentally Sensitive Areas, Forest,Odisha Environment and Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia said.
Singhkhuntia, who held a detailed discussion with the MLAs of Mayurbhanj district on the declaration of Similipal as an Eco-Sensitive Area,on Wednesday said that the District Collector of Mayurbhanj will be the Chairman of the Monitoring Committee as per sub-section (3) of Section 3 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The Deputy Director of Similipal South Wildlife Division will serve as the Member-Secretary.
The Minister said that the Zonal Master Plan will be prepared in consultation with the Forest, Environment, Agriculture, Revenue, Urban Development, Tourism, Rural Development, Irrigation, Panchayati Raj, Construction, Mines, and Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes Development Departments of the State Government, along with the Odisha State Pollution Control Board.
The Zonal Master Plan will provide for the restoration of degraded areas, conservation of existing water bodies, management of water bodies and watersheds, groundwater management, conservation of soil and moisture, and the needs of local communities, along with other environmental considerations.
It will regulate development within the Eco-Sensitive Zone and comply with the prohibited and regulated activities specified in the Eco-Sensitive Zone Notification. The plan will ensure and
promote eco-friendly development to secure the livelihoods of local communities.
Commercial mining, quarrying, and crushing units in the Eco-Sensitive Zone are prohibited under applicable laws, Singh said. Establishment of industries causing pollution (water, air, soil, noise, etc.) is also prohibited. New industries and expansion of existing polluting industries will not be allowed in environmentally sensitive areas.
Similarly, the establishment of major hydroelectric projects, use or production of hazardous substances, or discharge of effluents and industrial wastes into natural water bodies or land
areas is prohibited.
New sawmills, brick kilns, the use of plastic bags, commercial use of wood, and activities related to tourism such as flying aircraft or hot air balloons over the sanctuary or national park area will also be prohibited as per the law.
Rainwater harvesting, organic farming, adoption of green technologies, promotion of village crafts, use of renewable energy and fuel, agroforestry, horticulture and medicinal tree plantations, use of environmentally friendly transport, skill development, restoration of degraded land, forests and habitats, and environmental awareness will be actively promoted within the Eco-Sensitive Zone,
the Minister said.
