Patients face harrowing ordeal btw IGMC and AIMSS: Mismanagement in Healthcare Services

Shimla, Apr 9 (UNI) Hundreds of patients and their attendants are enduring immense difficulties due to the poor coordination between Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, and the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities (AIMSS), Chamyana. A flawed health management system has led to an agonising experience for those seeking treatment in Shimla’s two major government health facilities.
The government’s decision to shift five super-specialty departments—Gastroenterology, Neurology, Urology, Orthopedics, and Dermatology—from IGMC to AIMSS has not been backed by proper infrastructural and administrative planning. As a result, patients are being forced to shuttle between the two hospitals, often multiple times in a day, just to complete basic treatment formalities.
M.P.S. Rana, a patient who recently went through this ordeal, narrated his painful experience. "First, I had to get my registration done at IGMC. Then, I was sent to Chamyana for diagnostic tests. Finally, I had to return to IGMC to show the reports to the doctor. Travelling back and forth takes at least two hours, and I had to wait another two hours at both places. It’s mentally and physically exhausting, especially for patients in distress."
