Plea for court-monitored probe into Murshidabad violence during Waqf Act protests

New Delhi, Apr 15 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday received petitions seeking a court-monitored investigation into the violent clashes that erupted in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on April 13 during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025.
One of the petitions, filed by Advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha, urges the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the apex court’s monitoring.
Another petition by Advocate Vishal Tiwari seeks the formation of a five-member Judicial Enquiry Commission headed by a retired Supreme Court judge.
The petitioners also requested the Court to seek a status report from the State of West Bengal regarding the incident, direct measures for protection of lives and property, and take action against individuals making provocative speeches that may incite violence.
Reports indicate that three people lost their lives during the unrest. The Calcutta High Court has already intervened by ordering the deployment of central forces in the Murshidabad district to maintain law and order.
