Rakhimova upsets Paolini to reach Third Round

London, July 3 (UNI) In one of the biggest upsets of the Wimbledon 2025 Ladies’ Singles draw, Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova stunned World No. 5 Jasmine Paolini in a dramatic three-set battle on Thursday to book her place in the Round of 32.
Rakhimova, ranked World No. 80, came from a set down to defeat the Italian 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Court No.3. The 2-hour-19-minute contest marked Rakhimova’s maiden victory over a top 10 player and only her second singles win at Wimbledon.
This shock result added to the growing list of upsets in the women’s draw, with Rakhimova becoming the latest to send a seeded player packing- Paolini becoming the 16th seed to fall before the third round.
Paolini, runner-up at Wimbledon last year and a semifinalist at Bad Homburg last week, started strong and controlled the opening set, capitalising on her opponent’s nerves and six double faults. However, the Russian regrouped in the second set, cutting down errors and gaining momentum.
The deciding set saw Rakhimova break early before sealing the win with a clean forehand winner, to the delight of enthusiastic spectators that had enjoyed a spirited contest. Despite the loss, Paolini maintained her sportsmanship throughout, even laughing off a moment when she was accidentally struck by a return.
Speaking after the match, Rakhimova acknowledged the nerves of playing on a major stage. “I just pretend I’m playing a normal girl, not No. 4 in the world, and it worked out,” she said with a smile.
The 23-year-old now moves on to face No.30 seed Linda Noskova in the third round, in what promises to be an open section of the draw, with No.13 seed Amanda Anisimova the highest-ranked remaining player in the quarter.
Rakhimova’s performance, which equals her previous Grand Slam best at Roland-Garros 2023, signals a major breakthrough on grass as she eyes a deep run at SW19.
