Rinderknech upsets Zverev in Wimbledon epic

London, July 1 (UNI) In one of the biggest upsets of the Wimbledon Championships so far, France's Arthur Rinderknech earned his maiden Top 5 win by defeating third-seed Alexander Zverev in a gripping five-set battle to reach the second round here today.
The first-round match, which began yesterday, was suspended due to the 11 p.m. curfew with the players locked at one set each. When play resumed under an open roof today, Rinderknech surged ahead, eventually prevailing 7-6(3), 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 in four hours and 44 minutes on Centre Court.
Ranked No 72 in the world, the 29-year-old Frenchman showcased aggressive net play, winning 80 percent (44/55) of his net points, and held his nerve despite blowing a lead in the fourth-set tie-break. Rinderknech had already built momentum this grass-court season, having upset World No 10 Ben Shelton at Queen’s Club.
Zverev, who reached the Stuttgart final and Halle semifinals earlier this year, struggled to impose his authority in extended baseline rallies. His loss makes him the fourth Top 10 seed to exit early at this year’s Championships, following Lorenzo Musetti, Holger Rune, and Daniil Medvedev.
Rinderknech will next face Cristian Garin in a bid to reach the third round at Wimbledon for the first time.
Meanwhile, on No 1 Court, fifth-seeded American Taylor Fritz completed a dramatic comeback against France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Their match was also halted overnight with the score tied after four sets. Fritz, who had saved three set points in the fourth-set tiebreak, used the momentum today to claim the decider 6-4.
Fritz, who arrived in London after clinching his fourth Eastbourne title, will face ‘s-Hertogenbosch champion Gabriel Diallo in the second round. He now holds a 13-11 record in fifth sets and continues his strong run on grass this season.
